CheltenhamMaman HQ was tempted to borrow a baby when the invitation to visit the brand new yoga school, Studio 13 on Cheltenham’s Bath Road. Along with a whole host of tempting classes the lovely Clare is offering a mother and baby class on Tuesday mornings for babies who are not yet crawling. Sadly the Cheltenham Bébé is definitely no longer in that category (sob) so we had to recruit one of the Maman army to head out for us and find out if the buzz about Studio Thirteen reflects what’s actually on offer.
Cue the beautiful Maman that is Frankie Chapman and the non crawling delight that is little baby Grayson.
Before going along to Studio 13’s Mama and Baby Class I had a few reservations.. Not only am I a Yoga Virgin I also don’t feel completely back to strength after having my second child nearly four months ago.
I also wondered if it would just be the same type of format as all the other baby and mummy groups around, where it is more for baby then mama… However I needn’t have worried, there wasn’t a nursery rhyme or rattle in sight.
The class states that it will help to ‘reawaken and restore your core muscles, strengthen the pelvic floor and engage the abdominal muscles’, all of which I felt really had been stretched, pushed and broken after carrying my whopping 9lb5oz boy!
It really did reawaken something within me, I felt able to push myself to do stretches that I have been tentative to do, but with the guidance from Clare the Yoga instructor (and Studio 13 owner) I felt able to test what my body could still do. It was great to know that in there somewhere my core still does exist yay!!
The class is 1hr long, which felt like just the right amount of time, as I managed to feed my little one, entertain him with a downward dog and still feel like I had had a nice gentle workout and relax. The first 50 minutes were used to concentrate on the yoga and pranayama – yoga breathing techniques, and the final 10 minutes were used for relaxation.
The studio space is above Clare and her husband’s other business; Mack Residential Lettings at number 13 Bath Road. The Space is intimate and beautifully decorated. Who doesn’t love a Regal Regency building?!
I found the look and the smells of the room really helped me to feel relaxed, and Clare’s laid back and down to earth approach was just the right touch!
As well as the Mama and Baby yoga sessions, the studio also offers a wide range of different styles of Yoga, as well as Pilates.
One of the classes that caught my eye was the yoga sessions available for teenagers, what a wonderful idea! This would have been something I would have loved to have had available back in the days of GCSEs to help better focus and relieve the stresses of exams and teen life.
And if you want to have Clare or one of her team come to you, they offer private parties, corporate yoga sessions, or even hen parties!
Clare is so lovely and just has this air about her that instantly makes you feel at ease. She and her husband came from Ireland to the Cotswolds 20 years ago and settled in Cheltenham. She is a mum of four so is more then aware of the stresses and strains that pregnancy can take on the body and I think this really comes across in her approach.
She has now been practicing yoga for about ten years and in 2015 decided to take the plunge and open her own studio, it was then that Studio 13 was born.
Clare told me how she wanted to create a space that felt calm and welcoming to everyone and I really can say that she has succeeded to do so.
I think it is fair to say that yoga can often come with a stigma attached to it, maybe even a bit of snobbery and elitism and for me that had always been one of the things that had put me off.
Would I turn up wearing the right or wrong thing, would I be more of a worm as opposed to a warrior pose princess, or would my downward dog leave people thinking I looked more like a dying dog, but as soon as I met Clare and the other lovely ladies in the class, I had felt silly for having any of these reservations at all.
